FiberLineCommunications.com Ethernet over Copper (EoC) Ethernet over copper, commonly referred to as EoC, is a relatively new technology that is rapidly becoming the preferred choice of businesses, when compared to T1, bonded T1 and fractional DS3. (EoC) provides bandwidth pipes that range between two and twenty megabits per second (mpbs). Ethernet over Copper is distance limited, and therefore is not available everywhere. EoC is available in most cities, but not in most rural locations. 20 mbps EoC is usually only available to businesses that are within 7000 feet of a fiber fed telecom central office. Businesses that are within 8000 feet of a fiber fed Ethernet equipped CO can obtain 15 mbps EoC. Businesses that are within 11000 feet of the CO can obtain 10 mbps Ethernet. Because large cities are densely populated, they usually have several telecom central offices to meet the needs of the large population. For this reason, a large percentage of the businesses located in these densely populated cities can obtain EoC bandwidth. Because T1 and Bonded T1 commonly cost about twice as much as Ethernet over copper, many businesses that are within range of EoC now choose Ethernet rather than T1 or bonded T1. Ethernet over copper is now as versatile as T1 in its ability to efficiently carry PRI, analog, SIP and Hosted PBX voice (telephone) services, as well as internet, MPLS networking, and integrated bandwidth services.
