  1. Pros: The i3-2310M CPU has decent pfrroemance and hardware virtualization support, runs cool, very good battery life (5 hours or more, depending on what you\’re using it for), textured plastic surface for a good grip while carrying it around. Cons: glossy screen surface makes it unusable outside or with a window behind you; only 2 USB ports; USB 2.0 instead of 3.0; no HDMI port; no bluetooth; weak sound (esp. compared to HP machines); power adapter plug stick straight out just asking to be bumped to break the power jack. One other very annoying thing is that the active area of the touchpad extends a bit too far to the left, so that when your hands are resting in the home position on the keyboard (with forefingers on the F and J keys), the heel of your left hand activates the touchpad, causing weird behavior. (WHAT was Toshiba thinking?!?) I finally glued a short length of popsicle stick along the left side of the touchpad to solve the problem by keeping the heel of my hand from touching the touchpad. A black Sharpie marker made the popsicle stick match the case, so that it\’s not toooo ugly. The big advantage of the Intel i3-2310M CPU over the similar B940 CPU is that the i3-2310M has hardware virtualization support. (It\’s also 33% faster, according to PassMark.) The AMD A4-3300M ( A series ) is also very attractive, and generally less expensive than machines with the i3-2310M, but the only currently available sub-$400 laptop with that CPU was an HP machine with a 14 display, and I wanted the larger screen. So I went with this Toshiba. (Note: the widely-used AMD E-350 CPU is dog-slow, and the Intel Atom CPUs are even slower.) If you shop around (e.g., watch SlickDeals) you can find DDR3 laptop memory very cheap these days, so I immediately bought a pair of 4GB DDR3 RAM sticks for $36, and upgraded this computer to 8GB. So now I have a fast i3-2300M laptop with 15.6 display and 8GB of RAM, for a total of only about $416 + tax.
